The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship program offers fully funded scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as research students (leading to Master's or PhD degrees). There are two main application routes: Embassy Recommendation and University Recommendation. The scholarship covers various fields of study. Applications for the 2027 intake are expected to open around April/May 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must generally be under 35 years of age (as of April 1, 202 year of enrollment). Must be a national of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (African countries are eligible). Must have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent for Master's, or Master's degree for PhD. Must be willing to learn Japanese and interested in Japan. Good academic record required. Specific requirements vary by embassy/university.
Financial Benefits
Fully funded. Includes a monthly stipend (e.g., ¥143,000 for Master's students, ¥144,000 for PhD students, subject to change), tuition fees waiver, and round-trip airfare between the home country and Japan.
